How to Set Up Tap2Talk on Windows in 2 Minutes

Step-by-step guide to installing Tap2Talk on Windows 11. Download the installer, paste your Groq API key, and start dictating in under 2 minutes.

Tap2Talk Setup on Windows: The Quick Version

Installing Tap2Talk on Windows is straightforward. Download the installer, run it, paste your Groq API key, and start dictating. The whole process takes about 2 minutes. Here’s exactly how.

What You Need

  • Windows 11 (Windows 10 is not supported)
  • A Groq API key (free — here’s how to get one)
  • A working microphone (built-in, headset, or USB)

Step-by-Step Installation

Step 1: Download the Installer

Go to tap2talk.app and click the Windows download button. You’ll get an .exe installer.

Step 2: Run the Installer

Double-click the downloaded .exe file. If Windows SmartScreen shows a warning (“Windows protected your PC”), click “More info” and then “Run anyway.” This happens because Tap2Talk is a newer app and Windows hasn’t seen it enough times yet. It’s safe to proceed.

Follow the installer prompts. The defaults are fine — just click through.

Step 3: Open Tap2Talk

After installation, Tap2Talk should launch automatically. If it doesn’t, find it in your Start menu and open it.

Tap2Talk runs in your system tray (the small icons near the clock in your taskbar). Look for the Tap2Talk icon there.

Step 4: Paste Your Groq API Key

The onboarding wizard will walk you through setup. When it asks for your Groq API key:

  1. Go to console.groq.com.
  2. Sign up or log in (free, no credit card).
  3. Create an API key.
  4. Copy and paste it into Tap2Talk.

If you need detailed instructions, follow our step-by-step Groq API key guide.

Step 5: Hold Right Alt and Talk

Done. Click into any text field — Outlook, Word, Chrome, Slack, Notion, Discord, whatever. Hold the Right Alt key, speak naturally, and release. Your transcribed text appears at the cursor.

Troubleshooting Common Windows Issues

Windows SmartScreen blocks the installer

Click “More info” then “Run anyway.” SmartScreen flags new or less commonly downloaded executables. This is normal for newer apps and doesn’t mean the file is unsafe.

Nothing happens when I press Right Alt

Check these in order:

  1. Is Tap2Talk running? Look for its icon in the system tray (you may need to click the small arrow to expand the tray). If it’s not there, open it from the Start menu.
  2. Are you pressing the RIGHT Alt key? The left Alt key won’t work. Tap2Talk specifically uses the Right Alt key (or Right Ctrl as an alternative).
  3. Is another app intercepting Right Alt? Some keyboard customization tools (AutoHotkey, PowerToys Keyboard Manager) may remap Right Alt. Check for conflicts.

Transcription comes back blank

  1. Check your Groq API key — Open Tap2Talk settings and verify the key is correct. Generate a new one at console.groq.com if needed.
  2. Check your microphone — Go to Settings > System > Sound and make sure your microphone is selected and working. Use the “Test your microphone” feature to verify Windows can hear you.
  3. Check microphone permissions — Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and make sure “Let desktop apps access your microphone” is turned on.

Text pastes in the wrong place

Tap2Talk pastes into whatever window has focus. Make sure you click into the correct app and text field before you start speaking. Don’t switch windows while recording.

After Installation

Now that Tap2Talk is running, here are the features worth knowing:

  • Right Ctrl — Works as an alternative to Right Alt. Use whichever feels more natural.
  • Lock mode — Double-tap Right Alt (or Right Ctrl) to lock dictation on. Talk as long as you want without holding anything. Tap once to stop. Perfect for longer emails or documents.
  • Custom words — Add names, acronyms, and technical terms so transcription gets them right the first time.
  • Custom prompt — Adjust how the AI formats and cleans up your text.

Windows 11 Requirement

Tap2Talk requires Windows 11. Windows 10 is not supported. If you’re still on Windows 10, you’ll need to upgrade before installing Tap2Talk.

To check your Windows version, press Win + R, type winver, and press Enter. You need version 22000 or higher (Windows 11).
