How to Set Up Tap2Talk on Mac in 2 Minutes

Step-by-step guide to installing Tap2Talk on macOS. Download, grant permissions, paste your Groq API key, and start dictating in under 2 minutes.

Tap2Talk Setup on Mac: The Quick Version

Setting up Tap2Talk on Mac takes about 2 minutes. Download the DMG, drag to Applications, grant two permissions, paste your Groq API key, and you’re dictating. Here’s exactly how.

What You Need

  • A Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or later)
  • macOS 13 Ventura or later
  • A Groq API key (free — here’s how to get one)
  • A working microphone (built-in or external)

Step-by-Step Installation

Step 1: Download the DMG

Go to tap2talk.app and click the Mac download button. The DMG file will download to your Downloads folder.

Step 2: Drag to Applications

Open the DMG. You’ll see the Tap2Talk icon and an Applications folder shortcut. Drag Tap2Talk into Applications. Eject the DMG when done.

Step 3: Open Tap2Talk

Open Tap2Talk from your Applications folder. If macOS says the app is from an unidentified developer, right-click (or Control-click) the app and select “Open” from the context menu. Click “Open” again in the dialog. You only need to do this once.

Step 4: Grant Accessibility Permission

macOS will prompt you to grant Accessibility permission. This is required — Tap2Talk uses it to detect your hotkey and paste text into other apps.

  1. Click “Open System Settings” when prompted (or go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility manually).
  2. Find Tap2Talk in the list and toggle it on.
  3. You may need to unlock the settings with your password first.

If Tap2Talk doesn’t appear in the list, drag the app from your Applications folder into the Accessibility list.

Step 5: Grant Microphone Permission

macOS will ask for microphone access when you first try to record. Click “Allow.” Without this, Tap2Talk can’t capture your voice.

You can verify this later at System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.

Step 6: Paste Your Groq API Key

The onboarding wizard will ask for your Groq API key. Go to console.groq.com, sign up or log in, create an API key, and paste it into Tap2Talk.

No credit card required. If you don’t have a key yet, follow our step-by-step guide to getting a free Groq API key.

Step 7: Hold Right Alt and Talk

That’s it. Put your cursor in any text field — an email draft, a Google Doc, Slack, Notes, whatever. Hold the Right Alt key on your keyboard, speak, and release. Your words appear as text.

Troubleshooting Common Mac Issues

”Tap2Talk can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer”

Right-click the app in Applications, select “Open,” then click “Open” in the dialog. This overrides Gatekeeper for that specific app. You only need to do it once.

Nothing happens when I press Right Alt

This almost always means Accessibility permission isn’t granted. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility and make sure Tap2Talk is toggled on. If you toggled it on while Tap2Talk was already running, quit and reopen the app.

Transcription comes back blank

Two things to check:

  1. Microphone permission — System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. Make sure Tap2Talk is allowed.
  2. Groq API key — Open Tap2Talk’s settings and verify your API key is correct. Try generating a new key at console.groq.com if you’re unsure.

Text pastes in the wrong app

Tap2Talk pastes into whichever app has focus when transcription finishes. Make sure your target app is in the foreground before you start speaking. Don’t click away while recording.

What Happens Next

Once you’re set up, explore these features:

  • Lock mode — Double-tap Right Alt to lock dictation on for long-form speaking. Tap once to release. Great for writing emails or documents hands-free.
  • Custom words — Add names, technical terms, or jargon that the transcription might not recognize by default.
  • Custom prompt — Adjust how the AI cleans up your text (formatting, punctuation style, etc.).
  • Right Ctrl — Works as an alternative hotkey if Right Alt conflicts with anything on your setup.
